After changing the name of the group (not the ID, ID still the same), all of a sudden all fields of this group are gone. I encoutered this problem already 2 or 3 times on other sites and I loose confidence making trivial changes like changing the field name.

Can you please test this issue with another field group and let me know if the issue persists? If you have a backup of your site, please restore the site and export the field group to a JSON file and share it with me. I will import the field group to my demo site and test this issue there.

I'll send you the export of the field group by email.
This group contained only html fields.Shorty I had the same issue on a fresh wp install where I created a field group for a setting page with around 15 fields. Then all of a sudden they where gone. Can't remember if I was changing the name of the group but it's likely I did. All of the fields had NO ENTRIES, and slowly slowy I think this problem occurs more likely when there is no data or just html fields..
I'll let you know if the problem occurs again in future.

This problem happens again over and over, now without changing anything on the id or the group name.
I need to export all my field groups all the time because I never know when they are gone disappear.
I Increased the max-input-vars already to 5000 and still it happens.

I still don't know what happens or how happens there with your screen record and an empty field group. If it is possible, please create an online staging site, restore your site there and share the admin site account. I will help you to check the issue.
