    The content box is shown with formatting options. Is it possible to display this as a normal textarea?

    Please follow this article to know how to save a field WYSIWYG value as post content https://docs.metabox.io/save-wysiwyg-content-post-content/

    Then you can change the field type WYSIWYG to textarea.
