Apologies if this has been asked before, but since WordPress 4.8 there has appeared a horizontal split screen in the editor to separate metaboxes from the content. I find it really annoying as I can no longer just scroll to the bit I want to edit and have the full depth of the editor screen available without mucking about with the horizontal bar.

I have however, noticed that this only applies to new installs of WordPress. Any sites I have that were created before 4.8 don't suffer from this issue. Does anyone know how I can disable it on all sites?

I really don't understand how this feature made to the final product, it's completely annoying to anyone who uses meta boxes, surely it irritates people who use Yoast, which is one of the most widely used plugins around.

    Hello there,

    Thanks for reaching out.

Do you mean the editing page is split into 2 horizontal parts? If you create field groups (meta boxes) with Meta Box plugin, you can set the context to side to display the meta box in the right sidebar of the editing page.
    Refer documentation https://docs.metabox.io/creating-fields-with-code/

Another way, you can click on the up/down arrow in the meta box on the editing page to move the meta box to the sidebar or back to under the content. Please check this screen record https://imgur.com/385Fued

Thanks, unfortunately, the sidebar is no good for me. I have found a discussion about the issue here: https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/69923

It looks like it's not going away any time soon.
