Before purchasing a bunch of addons I explicitly asked whether updates of the addons would show on the Plugins Page.
Anh Tran (Rilwis) explained that for the Core Bundle they don't, so I purchased the individual addons instead.
Now that one of them has received an update I expect this to show in my Plugins Page, but instead nothing shows.
You can imagine that I am disappointed, because this makes the use of the addons restricted to own use. In other words I cannot use the addons on any other sites than my own for the simple reason that I don't have control over sites I do not own.
On top of that I simply refuse to use plugins that need to be updated manually (physical upload via FTP) on sites I build for clients. That is amateur hour and my clients expect more from me.
To be brutally honest, I find the whole Updater plugin extremely clumsy at best:
- Why is my email address shown?
- Why is the API-key visible and not hidden with dots (like Gravity Forms and EDD do it)?
- Why was it necessary to re-invent the wheel when there are already so many working alternatives available? (Gravity Forms, EDD, WPML all have their own working system)
- How can you justify selling addons for which updates can only be done manually?
Fixing this whole ordeal - or better yet, removing the non-working Updater and replacing it with for example implementing EDD with their licensing addon, should in my opinion be the number one priority for Meta Box to become mainstream.
Thanks for your consideration.
Piet

KeymasterHi Piet,
Sorry for the problem you have met. As we already talked in email, I'm fixing the problem with the Updater (remove the email field, hide the API key field, etc.). After it's done, you will receive updates as expected. Please give me some time.
Regarding EDD or GF, I'm afraid they can't fit my requirements. That's why I made the system my own. Thanks for your suggestion anyway.
August 24, 2015 at 8:25 AM #1292Hi Anh Tran,
Yes we spoke about removing the email filed and hiding the API key, but I don't see how that relates to the current non-functioning of the Updater that I am experiencing.
The Conditional Logic addon was just updated, why don't I see that on my Plugins Page?

KeymasterI found the bug and am fixing it. I will update the Updater extension immediately when I'm done. Please be patient.
Thanks.

KeymasterHi Piet,
I've just updated the Updater extension. Now it works with Conditional Logic. Please update the Updater (using itself) and then you can see the new versions of Conditional Logic.
Sorry for this inconvenience.
August 24, 2015 at 11:01 PM #1302Hi Anh Tran,
Updater indeed shows an update (to 1.1.0). However after successfully running the update, for some reason it switches (itself?) back to 1.0.0. I have tried this 3 times now, and 3 times the same thing happens. Most likely that has to do with the fact that the version number has not been updated (line 6 of the meta-box-updater.php file).

KeymasterPlease try again, I uploaded the wrong file to server 🙁
August 25, 2015 at 8:42 AM #1304Thanks, now it works.
There is still one thing off though.
In my case the Conditional Logic addon had an update available, right.
I also have 2 other addons installed. SO when I did a hard refresh after updating the Updater to 1.1.0 the Plugins sidebar menu showed a red ball with a white 3 in it, telling me that there were 3 updates available.
The 3 seems to be triggered by the amount of Metabox addons you have installed. Once I ran the update for the Conditional Logic addon, the notice disappeared.Although it's not a breaking issue, I still think that it should be solved, because it is buggy at best 🙂
Cheers,

KeymasterGreat that it works for you now. I will check the number of available updates and will update the Updater as soon as possible.
Thanks for letting me know 🙂

KeymasterHi again, I've just updated the Updater extension today with a fix for PHP notice bugs which I think caused the issue of wrong number of updates. I tested in my environments and it worked correctly. Can you please update and check that?
Thanks!
